Some Questions to Create Your Plan

How much contact after match & before delivery? Getting together to talk, Attend doctor visits, ultrasound, etc.,

How much contact after birth / placement-How will that contact take place--through agency/attorney or birth family to adoptive family directly?

Does birthmom want anyone with her at the hospital during labor and delivery (her family, adoptive family members)?

How much contact does birthmom want in the hospital with the baby?

Does birthmom want adoptive family to be on the maternity floor?

Does birthmom want the baby to go directly from the hospital to the adoptive parents' home?

Does birthmom want to choose transitional care so she may take more time to make her decision?

Do you all want a placement ceremony?

Does birthmom want adoptive family to attend child birth classes?

Completely Open - Birthparents have a relationship with the adoptive couple and see the baby they placed for adoption. In some instances this is a weekly meeting, in others it may occur several times a year. Many choose to meet on the birthday of the baby or on special holidays.

Semi-Open - Birthparents and adoptive parents meet and communicate through letters. The birthparents may meet with adoptive parents after placement, but not with the baby.

Barely Open - Birthparents and adoptive parents know each other's first names only. They have met prior to the birth. The adoptive parents may have visited the birthparents in the hospital after birth. After placement, all communication is done through letter and photographs or videos. Birthparents do not see the baby or the adoptive parents.
