Financial Resources If you choose to parent your child, you will probably need some financial help. Remember much of this is temporary and you will need to find employment. All but child support are on a qualification basis. You will need to contact your local government assistance office. Child Support. Please don’t discount child support from the child’s father. You can contact your local state office of Family Services to help you get this filed. Not all father’s will pay willingly and sometimes it’s a pain to do, but it may very well be worth the effort. WIC-Women Infants and Children. This is a great resource for additional basic food items. You will get formula for your baby, and as s/he grows, baby food and juice. While you are pregnant or nursing, you will get food for you, as well. Food Stamps. Food Stamps are based on your income. You cannot buy diapers or clothes with food stamps, so you will need additional income to purchase those items (possibly the child support). Housing Assistance. You may qualify for housing assistance. You must be at least 18 to qualify. You may receive a portion or all of your rent. You may qualify for subsidized housing. There is usually a waiting list for that. TANF. Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. You may qualify for government assistance while you look for work. This is very temporary. Child Care. You may qualify for free child care while you work. Check with your local government assistance office. Medicaid. May be called by a different name in your location. Will cover medical expenses for you and your child.
