Agencies by State

Please do your research whenever you work with an adoption professional.  Nurture Adopt is not responsible for any outcome in working with adoption professionals listed on our site.

In the following states, it is illegal to use a facilitator.  If you live in one of these states, please only use a licensed agency or attorney to pursue your adoption.  This is a preliminary list and we have have missed some.  Please check the laws in your state for facilitators and expectant mother expenses.  Know your laws!!!

Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Utah, Virginia

Be very cautious in trying to circumvent your state's laws on facilitators by using other state laws, finalizing elsewhere, etc. as your state will receive ICPC paperwork and you do not want CPS involved in your private adoption.  HOWEVER, the way around the state laws (which is how the facilitators do placements in the states where it is illegal) is to have the adoptive family finalize in the state the baby is born/mother resides because then the complete adoption is done in a different state and you follow that states laws.

I also am aware of someone from Michigan who did this, found their adoption situation through a facilitator, finalized in another state and filed the fees for that on their taxes....... caught up with them. Not only could they NOT included that on the adoption tax credit but they ended up being investigated by DHS and lived in fear for several months of losing their child!!!

States that you CAN'T pay any expectant mother expenses (if you OR the expectant mom are located in that state):

Missouri, Ohio, West Virginia--may be more, check out the laws!!!

PLEASE do your research before giving anyone money for an adoption.  Check with your state laws and the laws of the state the agency/facilitator is working out of.  Check with DCFS or other licensing authority to make sure they are licensed to do adoptions.  Check with the BBB.  Do your searches online.  If you google an agency or person you are looking to work with, you may find all kinds of information.  Every business has ups and downs and things that don't work out.  If you see it repeatedly, there is a problem.  There is too much money involved with adoptions to waste it on a bogus agency or facilitator or one that doesn't do a good job.  Remember, even with a good agency, your wait may be long---it's not the old days when you were put on a list and got the next baby when it was your turn.

I did the best I could at the time I put this together.  I will try to update it before long to make sure it is still current.  Do your homework!
